Yes. Visitors can drive in Ontario with a valid Chinese licence for up to 3 months.

Ontario lets visitors drive on a valid licence from their own country for up to 3 months (the official pages say "3 months"; 90 days is an approximation). Carry your licence whenever you drive, and make sure the vehicle is insured and has a valid permit. If your visit will last longer than 3 months, you need an International Driving Permit issued in China before you arrive: you cannot get one after arriving in Canada. These rules are for visitors only; if you move to Ontario, the 60-day new resident rules apply instead.

You can drive on your existing licence for 60 days after becoming an Ontario resident. After that, you need an Ontario licence.

The 60-day clock starts when you become an Ontario resident, not when your visa or permit was issued. Once an Ontario licence is issued, you must use it and can no longer drive in Ontario on your Chinese licence. Some required documents can take weeks to obtain from China, so start gathering them before you move or as soon as you arrive.

No. China does not have a licence exchange agreement with Ontario, so a direct swap is not possible. You apply through graduated licensing, with credit for up to 12 months of your Chinese driving experience.

Rules changed on July 1, 2026. Drivers from non-exchange countries now get a maximum of 12 months of verified foreign driving experience credit, and must pass the vision test, the knowledge test and the G2 road test, wait at least 12 months, then pass the G road test. Foreign experience can no longer be used to shorten the 12-month wait between the G2 and G road tests, and the old option of going straight to the G test with 2+ years of experience is gone. To receive credit beyond what your licence itself shows, you need an official letter of authentication from the Chinese licensing authority confirming the licence is authentic, written in English or French.

The translation must come from an approved translator and be dated within 6 months of your application. Approved translators include non-Canadian embassies, consulates or a high commissioner's office, and members of professional associations such as ATIO.
