Can you drive in Ontario with a Ukrainian license?

Yes. Visitors can drive in Ontario with a valid Ukrainian licence for up to 3 months.

Ontario lets visitors drive on a valid licence from their own country for up to 3 months (the official pages say "3 months"; 90 days is an approximation). Carry your licence whenever you drive, and make sure the vehicle is insured and has a valid permit. If your visit will last longer than 3 months, you need an International Driving Permit issued in Ukraine before you arrive: you cannot get one after arriving in Canada. These rules are for visitors only; if you move to Ontario, the 60-day new resident rules apply instead.

Not for the first 3 months. An IDP is required for visits longer than 3 months, and it must be issued in your home country before you arrive.

For visits up to 3 months, your valid Ukrainian licence is enough on its own. For visits longer than 3 months, Ontario requires an International Driving Permit from your own country, obtained before arrival: Canada does not issue IDPs to visitors. Because Ukrainian licences are not issued in English or French, carrying an IDP is strongly recommended even for short visits: it doubles as an official translation for police and rental companies.

You can drive on your existing licence for 60 days after becoming an Ontario resident. After that, you need an Ontario licence.

The 60-day clock starts when you become an Ontario resident, not when your visa or permit was issued. Once an Ontario licence is issued, you must use it and can no longer drive in Ontario on your Ukrainian licence. Some required documents can take weeks to obtain from Ukraine, so start gathering them before you move or as soon as you arrive.

Yes. Ukraine has a licence exchange agreement with Ontario: with 2+ years of full-licence experience you exchange directly for a full class G licence, with no knowledge or road test.

Anyone exchanging a licence takes a vision test. With more than 2 years of full-class driving experience in the last 3 years, you receive a full class G licence with no road test. With less than 2 years, you receive a class G2 licence and take the G road test once your total experience reaches 24 months (experience from other jurisdictions can be combined). The licence can be expired for less than one year at the time of application. The exchange covers car licences only, not motorcycle or commercial classes. Ukraine is on Ontario's current exchange list, which many older guides miss. The exchange covers full category B or higher licences. You must bring an authentication document issued by the Ukrainian licensing authority, Consulate or Embassy: original or electronically provided, dated within the last 6 months, on official letterhead, showing date first licensed, date of birth, licence classes, status and expiry. Your Ukrainian licence is surrendered on exchange. DriveTest also has special exemptions for people from Ukraine who cannot present a valid original licence.

Vision test only, if you have 2+ years of experience. With less than 2 years you get a G2 and take one road test later; no knowledge test either way.

Because Ukraine is an exchange jurisdiction, the written knowledge test is waived. Everyone takes the vision test at the DriveTest centre (bring corrective lenses if you wear them). Usually yes. If your licence or authentication letter is not in English or French, it must be translated.

If you provide your original licence together with an authentication letter written in English or French from the Consulate or Embassy, a separate licence translation is not needed. Otherwise, an MTO-recognized translator must translate the licence, and the translation must be dated within 6 months of your application.
